The second edition of Nantes’ ISI NucMed thematic school went ahead from 3 to 6 July 2023. Fifteen young researchers, clinicians and students from several European countries attended.

From the production of radioisotopes to the use of radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic or therapeutic applications in nuclear medicine departments: ISI NucMed thematic school, organised by the TransForMed cluster and Arronax Nantes research community, aims to cover the full range of scientific topics that contribute to the development of nuclear medicine, from fundamental research to the patient’s bedside.

This second edition focused on alpha particle emitting radionuclides, in particular astatine-211, an area of excellence for research teams in Nantes. It was held at four venues in Nantes involved in nuclear medicine research: the GIP ARRONAX which operates the Arronax cyclotron, the Faculty of Science and Technology at Nantes University, which houses the LS2N laboratory, Centrale Nantes engineering school and the IRS-UN which houses the CRCI2NA laboratory and its nuclear oncology team.

The programme for these 4 days of training (compared with three at the first ISI NucMed in June 2022) included lectures by international specialists in nuclear physics, radiochemistry, dosimetry, artificial intelligence, radiomics, radiopharmacy and theranostics, as well as a practical session in image processing and deep learning and several new features: a poster session where participants presented their field of research to the others, a practical session on molecular modelling and, each day, a clinical spot to give a perspective on the contributions of the different research themes.

At the end of the course, the participants were extremely satisfied with the scientific content, the diversity of topics and the quality of the presentations. They all said they would recommend their colleagues to attend ISI NucMed if it were organised again in the future. Will ISI NucMed be back in 2024?
